“We must stop crushing boys’ capacity for empathy in the name of turning them into ‘proper men’.” – Dr Michael Flood
What happens during a counselling session?
“Why would I see a counsellor? Do I have to sit and talk about my feelings? How does counselling work?”
These are some the of questions you might ask yourself when you’re considering seeing a counsellor.
So, let me reassure you! No, you don’t have to sit and talk about your feelings. If you do want to, then go for it! But if that feels a little daunting, then rest assured that I’m not here to make you feel uncomfortable.
The aim of counselling is to provide you with a safe, confidential place to have a chat. We can banter, have some jokes and through everyday conversation, I can help you explore what’s happening in your life and what might help you to feel better.
I use an approach called Schema Therapy, which is an integrative psychodynamic counselling technique. What does all that mean? Well it means there is no right or wrong way to do counselling. I have a range of tools that we can work with and the benefit is, it allows you to find the strategies you feel most comfortable with.
Using these strategies then allows you to work through areas such as limiting beliefs, extreme emotions, unhelpful habits or behaviours, challenging thought patterns and healing from past experiences.

Some other benefits of counselling are:
- no referral required
- usually a shorter waiting time for appointments
- there are no labels or diagnoses put on your medical record
- a person-centred approach – you make the decisions
- no limit to how many sessions you have
- comparable cost to the “out of pocket” cost of a psychologist
- online so no travel time or costs – click here for more info on online therapy
